OLD LOVE, NEW STYLE: The New Balance 574S v2
Updating a classic is tough business. Most companies strike gold with one silhouette that catapults them right to the top. For New Balance, that arguably has to be the 574. Born alongside the jogging boom of the 80s all the way to the 90s, the 574 was a technical running sneaker that soon transitioned to the world of the average Joes.
It became a staple in everyday wear thanks to its comfort and style. Kids began wearing the sneaker, not just for physical education classes, but also for parties and just hanging out. Everybody wanted a pair and so New Balance concocted different colorways and styles that mixed and matched various materials and prints.
Over three decades later, New Balance is still at it with the 574, but this time, the brand is taking its original design from 1988 to the future.
No step forward is genuine if it does not look back to the past. In reworking this all-time favorite, New Balance looked at its running heritage and the original promise of comfort they made to runners everywhere.
With this in mind, New Balance started from the sole all the way up. Starting off with a Fresh Foam midsole, New Balance set the precedent of comfort. This was followed up with a commitment to using lightweight suede and mesh for the upper – a balancing act between breathability and functionality.
When all things were in place, the result was a modern twist on the brand’s most iconic shoe. New Balance sought to create a sneaker that still bore resemblance to the people’s favorite while incorporating the brand’s technologies. In that process, the New Balance 574S v1 was born and boy was it received well in the sneaker community. Both purists and casual wearers sung high praises for the sneaker and thus, a sequel was seemingly created right then and there.
For 2018, New Balance went back to the drawing board to see how the newly-created 574S could be furthered. If you’ve been wondering, the most noticeable difference between v1 and v2 lies on their respective soles.
New Balance tweaked the v2’s sole to feature a thin strip that connects the forefoot to the heel. By articulating the sole, the v2 offers better flexibility and mobility than its predecessor. This is a trend we’ve noticed in silhouettes from other brands as well which only means that it’s a minor tweak that offers a major upgrade in the performance of the product.
Often times, with sneakers placed on a pedestal, the challenge becomes a constant push and pull between pushing for innovation while remaining true to the OG. With the 574S v2, New Balance pulled off a great sequel to a pretty impressive re-imagination of a classic. Props to the people over at NB for respecting the OG but adding tiny bits and details that propel and introduce the sneaker to a new market.
Have you checked out the NB 574S v2? If not, you can still check out some pairs over at Capital Glorietta 4, SM Aura, Trinoma and U.P. Town Center. Trust us, you’ll want to keep wearing this sneaker once you’ve tried it on feet. The comfort is on another level and the materials used are definitely top-notch. Without a doubt, these kicks take us back to the 80s and 90s with how it fits and feels on feet.
